Having a car entails a lot of responsibility for the owner.  Aside from the fact that you need learn ways to save on gas consumption, you will need to make sure that you keep your car clean and well-maintained.  Moreover, it is inevitable that at some point, you will find yourself needing to have your car repaired.

There have been many horror stories regarding car repair shops that do not have the best intentions.  Admittedly, there are those that use sub quality auto parts, overcharge, and do not deliver their guarantees.  Fortunately, most vehicle owners now know better; you will need to be more active in searching for the right car service shop for your vehicle.

Here are some tips to follow when having your car repaired:

1.     Know your car
You should be able to pinpoint what is wrong with your car somehow.  Remember that car owner’s manual you shoved somewhere in your glove compartment? You should have read that right after you purchased the vehicle.  This way you would get to know your car better and in cases of maintenance or repair needs, you will be an active participant in getting your car fixed.

2.    Talk
When you bring your car to a service center, you will need to be very detailed in explaining your car’s problems.  You will also need to use car owner jargon so you had better learn to use it.  Things like air filters and cabin filters and oil filters. Not to mention tire sizes and applications are just the lesser complicated stuff you will hear.  Do not be afraid to ask questions if you do not understand something, make the mechanic explain it fully so there would be no danger of misinterpretation.  Vehicles are very complex machines and you do not want to be ignorant on what is to be done to it.

3.    Research
Do not go into the first car service center that you see.  If you are in the middle of an emergency, choose the more reliable and known car service centers.  They might charge a little bit extra but at least you know you are getting quality service and products. Now of you are not in the middle of an emergency, it is best that you ask your friends and family for their recommendations on the better car service centers around.  You can even check a service center’s reputation through your local business bureaus to see if there are any complaints about the shop.

4.    Get everything in writing
When you go to a service center, the first thing you need to do is to make it clear that you are just in there for a consultation.  Ask if they charge for consultations and fee estimates if you do not let them fix your car. Get all the estimates on services and parts in writing.  They should be able to provide you a list of their quotes.  If you think that they are over estimating the damage or that they seem reluctant to talk about the damage in detail, leave and get another opinion.

5.    Know your rights
Finally, if you find out that you have been duped, or if you seem to be going back and forth the service centers for more and more repairs after they first rendered service, refer to your consumer rights.
