Taking Care Of Your Automatic Transmission Vehicle

While it is true that leaving your car repairs to professionals is still the safer choice, it does not mean that you leave everything to their discretion. You should also know your car very well, in case you find yourself experiencing car trouble in a location far from any service centers. You will also need to know how your vehicle works and the specifics of your car parts to avoid getting hoodwinked by dubious car repair centers around.

Before you bring your car in to any service center, it is best that you know what is causing the car trouble and the fundamentals behind it. While you may have a trusted repairman that does all the work for your car, you will be more comfortable in the knowledge that you know exactly what is happening and what is going to happen to your vehicle.

Some of the most common automatic transmission troubles are an immovable gear stick, stalled transmission, and gears refusing to work. Before you start troubleshooting your car, it is best that you get your car owner’s manual and see which parts you can do, and which parts you should leave to professionals. You might risk losing your warranty if you tinker around too much without knowing exactly what you should and shouldn’t so.

The first thing you need to do is to familiarize yourself with the parts that can be found inside your vehicle.

1. The bell housing. This is the bell-shaped metal casing found under your car. If your vehicle is a front wheel drive than you will find this at the side of the engine when you pop your hood open. If you have rear-wheel drive vehicles, you will find your whole transmission system under your car, right below the engine.

2. Transmission gears. Automatic transmission vehicles are made of a set of gears. Your car relies on these parts to move. If these gears are damaged in any way, you probably are nit going to make your car move without you pushing it.

3. Filter. The filter is not one single part but rather a lot of different filters with different functions. Your vehicle has an oil filter, an air cabin filter, fuel filter, among others. These filters are there for one main function, to keep dust, debris and other small and damaging particles from entering your car’s engines.

4. Transmission fluid. The transmission fluid is essential to keeping your gears working properly. Leaks should be checked and repaired immediately.

These are just some of the vital parts of your vehicle that you should be familiar with. Sometimes, just knowing what these parts do for your vehicle is enough to get to understand when your car is experiencing trouble and needs to be repaired and brought to a car service shop.

Some vehicle owners have the mistaken view that as long as a car is running, then they can postpone trips to the service shop. This should not be the case especially since you entrust your life and your family’s lives to your car whenever you drive it.
