Ensure Safety - Stay Focused On Your Driving
Have you ever experienced colliding with another car? Was it your fault? If it is, how did it happen? It must be because you haven’t seen the other vehicle approaching, right? And it might also be because the other driver hasn’t noticed you as well. Despite having good ratings in your driving school or drive tests, soon as you got comfortable with driving, you will surely overlook some of the most basic rule when driving sometimes and that is – looking every way!
Being preoccupied while driving off to work each morning will definitely cause inattention – it could be how you’d get around traffic jams, how you can avoid getting late, and also most of your projects on due. And likely, you will also have a lot running through your head while you’re driving home. Your inattention might be due to your being exhausted from a hard day’s work, however, not paying attention while driving is really not an acceptable excuse. Doing so will not only endanger your life, but also the lives of other people on the road – drivers and pedestrians.
The car itself is already heavy, and putting more force into it by driving fast makes it equal to a thousand pounds of energy depending on what your speed is. Think about it – this energy is powerful enough to throw you out of your car or worse, kill someone that you might crash into. Keep in mind the rules of defensive driving – that is to: always look, recognize and steer away from the dangers on the road. If you happen to be caught unaware, will you have enough time to react appropriately? For example, while caught in heavy traffic, we would sometimes make mental lists of things that we need to do. It would be safe if you’re doing it without moving or advancing your vehicle, a honk from the car behind you will easily put you out of your reverie. But multi-tasking by ticking of those things to do and stepping on the gas pedal, might cause you to miscalculate the distance from the car ahead of you and cause an accident. Surely, you’d be finding it hard to multi-task after that.
We all have a hard time controlling our thoughts and whims, and this is really a big problem. Getting bored could easily shift our attention to more interesting or important tasks. However, focusing on current tasks is a skill that should be honed – especially when you’re driving. Make an effort of not diverting your thoughts, reaching for your mobile phone or eat while you drive. Driving makes us already occupied with a lot of tasks, you need not to complicate it further by thinking about unimportant things such as what you will have for dinner. Always stay alert when you drive. And if you are tired, try get a bit of a rest in the parking lot to avoid shifting your mind to other things when you drive. And despite being less than an extreme sport, driving can actually be comparable to one as just like much of the adventurous activities we have – your full attention is required.
