Car Smarts - Be A Safe Driver
Car accidents are never wished for by anyone, but it is surprising that no matter how many traffic rules and regulations are displayed on each and every road, road mishaps still happen everyday. The thing is, car drivers that have been on the road and driving for almost half their lives become lax and sometimes do not focus as much attention to their driving as they should. You cannot deny that you have seen yourself speeding more than once, or running red lights especially when you are in a hurry. You also have to admit that you sometimes send messages or call, or even check your electronic mail over your mobile while driving. These are all unsafe habits but you always think that you are an experienced driver and safe driving is your second nature. But can you honestly say that the things you do inside your car while driving can be categorized as safe?
1. Ever gone over the speed limit, even for just one extra mile? Sure you have. Even if you did not get into an accident then, you would not know what you are toying with until you experience a car crash yourself. Speed limits are there for a reason, and that is to keep everyone on the road safe.
2. Running red lights is another common occurrence with drivers. There would always be an excuse once you do this; you may be late for the office, or you may be running late for an important meeting, or even late for a date. But there is never a good enough reason to do this. If you had one, you will probably call 911 or have a police escort with you. Keep in mind that when you run a red light, there is a big chance that someone from the other side of the intersection will crash into you and it would be deemed your fault.
3. Used to keeping your mobile at easy reach while driving? Another big mistake. You may think that the traffic is so slow anyway and you probably would not get into any mishaps but that is not true. There are more accidents that happen during heavy traffic because vehicles do not maintain a safe distance from each other. If you happen to pass by an accident during slow-moving traffic, chances are, those vehicles involved were not the causes of the jam; they are the results. Keep your mobile inside your bag and resist the urge to answer call and text messages. Focus!
4. Tailgating is another common cause of accidents on the road. No matter how many drivers’ education classes you have attended, it is still very hard not to follow other vehicles closely. However, the recommended distance of about two card’s length is what your reflexes need to react on any eventual brakes or sudden maneuvers of the vehicle in front of you.
5. Last but not the least, and certainly an important factor in safe driving, is keeping your vehicle maintained. You should always check your tires, your water, and your motor oil to avoid getting into accidents while on the road.
